“Our hard work together matters, it always has, and it will continue to matter as long as we faithfully show up willing to take on what is right in front of us that requires our response.”
– Fritz Hull, Wild Idea: The Whidbey Institute Story
This year, we were fortunate to celebrate over 50 years of the Whidbey Institute! It’s been a joy to welcome the people who built this extraordinary place from the ground up, as well as folks who’ve only recently discovered the magic of being here through a program or experience on the land—and everyone in between! It’s been an honor to hear your stories and share new Wild Ideas for our collective future.
So much has changed in the world since a community founded this space as a center for transformational learning. Yet, the need for the Whidbey Institute hasn’t changed. Much like when Fritz and Vivienne Hull first envisioned this place, we are once again asking ourselves what the future holds. As a community, we are grappling with the polycrises of climate change, racial and gender inequality, global violence, unpredictable leadership, and increasingly unattainable costs-of-living. Nonprofits feel this precariousness, too, addressing these very real issues while also coping with donation downtrends, higher operating costs, and staff shortages at a time when serving our communities and caring for our environment matters more than ever.
That’s why we have to Meet the Moment. Together, we can take action and nurture the ongoing vision planted here over five decades ago: working to cultivate connections that uplift ourselves, others, and the natural world.
You are a part of that vision and the Whidbey Institute’s continuing story. No matter what is to come, we can work together to sustain this unmatched environment where, for over half a century, people have come to share and discover the gifts of compassion, knowledge, resilience, and nature.
In order to Meet the Moment, we need you. We are just $107k away from our end-of-year goal of raising $250k. We’re also looking to secure pledges for 2025 in order to raise a grand total of $500k by October 2025. Together, we can bring into being even more opportunities for meaningful connection and change.
Below, you’ll find some highlights of the wonderful Wild Ideas that came into fruition this year and Wild Ideas we’re working to make into future realities.
